Liverpool 5-2 Wigan Athletic
League Cup - September 1989
The Reds were clear favourites to progress past Third Division Wigan in the second round of the Littlewoods Cup, and they all-but wrapped things up with 90 minutes to spare thanks to goals from Glenn Hysen, Peter Beardsley, John Barnes and two from Ian Rush.
Wigan Athletic 0-3 Liverpool
League Cup – October 1989
The fixture was switched to Anfield because of the inadequacy of Wigan's Springfield Park, though just 17,000 turned out on the night. Steve Staunton stood in up front in the absence of the injured Ian Rush and, incredibly, the left-back netted a hat-trick. Those were the days. Liverpool would face Arsenal in the third round – and that was where the League Cup journey ended for Kenny Dalglish's champions-elect.
Liverpool 3-0 Wigan Athletic
Premiership – December 2005
Peter Crouch ended his much-publicised goal drought with a 20-yard drive, though it did take two deflections on its way. Still, after 19 games off the scoresheet, it would have taken a brave man to argue with the new Kop favourite. As it turned out, any debate was made academic on 42 minutes when Crouch lobbed Michael Pollitt to make it two. Luis Garcia rounded off a fine performance with a chested goal from close-range.
Wigan Athletic 0-1 Liverpool
Premiership – February 2006
The Reds bagged their first win in four thanks to a 30-minute strike from Sami Hyypia. The Finn's first goal of the season followed an assist from fellow centre-back Jamie Carragher. Liverpool's failiure to kill the game on a dog-awful JJB pitch nearly proved costly in the second-half when Hyypia deflected a Matt Jackson shot goalwards. It took a fine save from Jerzy Dudek to secure the points.
Wigan Athletic 0-4 Liverpool
Premiership – December 2006
Craig Bellamy bounced back from a difficult week with a superb brace in one of the Reds' finest league performances under Rafa Benitez. The game, which provided a first away win of the season, was over by half-time thanks to further goals from Dirk Kuyt and an OG by Lee McCulloch.
Liverpool 2-0 Wigan Athletic
Premiership – April 2007
Two goals from Dirk Kuyt ensured Liverpool would be playing Champions League football in 2007-08 and maintained the club's 100 per cent record against Wigan. The game also provided landmarks for John Arne Riise, who made his 300th appearance, and Pepe Reina, who reached his century.
